SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE SERVICE

SERVICE
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Singer/songwriter Bob Dylan said it best:

“You're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody.
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.”1

The journey toward wholeness begins with an internal path of personal growth and discovery that leads to an external path of service to others.  The discipline of service focuses on how we can use our skills and abilities to contribute to the healing of individuals, families, local neighborhoods, and global communities.  And more than any other single way, “The grace of humility is worked into our lives through the discipline of service (Richard Foster).  But service is not a list of things we do.  Service is a way of living.

Service takes shape in the way that we put others ahead of ourselves.  One way to do this is through volunteering.  Volunteering can be a rewarding experience whether you choose to serve locally or internationally, for one afternoon or every week, for class credit or to fill your spare time. We all possess skills and abilities that can be used to help serve others.
