SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE FASTING

FASTING
We live in a world of excess where there is an emphasis on self-satisfaction. The media promotes indulgence and extravagance. But Scripture points us towards a different goal—that of restraint and self-control.

Fasting is practiced in many different forms.  It becomes a spiritual discipline when it is done for spiritual purposes.  You might abstain from certain foods, or all food, television, email or any number of things.  If it is done for the purpose of knowing God more intimately, then fasting becomes a spiritual discipline.

While fasting is not commanded in Scripture, Jesus seems to make the assumption that Christians do fast.  Jesus said that when we fast we should wash and groom ourselves, so others will not know what we are doing.  In a similar vain we are not to drag ourselves around morosely or brag about our accomplishments.  (Matthew 6:16-18)

Fasting is primarily an act of worship. Richard Foster in Celebration of Discipline says, “More than any other discipline, fasting reveals what controls us.”  But the discipline of fasting cannot simply be about avoiding something.  It must be about feasting on God instead.  Whatever you choose to give up, make sure that you build time into your day to read scripture and listen to what God might be saying to you.

Below are recommendations for fasting.  Remember that fasting is practiced in many different forms, so take time to discover what works best for you.

Fasting from Food

It is wise to begin fasting with a partial fast.

Fasting from electronics or activities

You might feel that things in whatever shape or form have come between you and God, As a result you may decide to fast from certain activities.  You may abstain from watching television, doing email, watching movies or playing computer games, instead focusing your time and energy on growing spiritually. This type of fast can bring powerful changes in your life, leading to greater intimacy with God.
