“Preservation of one's own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.”
- Cesar Chavez
Because we are different culturally, we should attempt to reconcile those differences and try to understand each other within that context. Without the knowledge of others and their cultural background, it is nearly impossible to understand and respect each other. The diversity between individuals is unfathomable, and taking the time to learn about other ethnicities and races can help to bridge that gap.
So how can we achieve this? There are many possible options to explore. Taking the time to travel abroad to another country is a great way to experience a completely different culture other than the American mentality. Discovering different foods and customs can be an exciting adventure, and see some beautiful international monuments, which are part of the arts and history aspect of culture.
For those who are unable to travel internationally due to financial restrictions or other reasons, there are still other possibilities available to you. Though you may not be able to leave the United States, there are still a large number of ethnic enclaves, such as Chinatown or Little Italy, that offer a little slice of that country in the larger cities. New York City, for example, is teeming with communities of ethnically different individuals, and as the home of many immigrant families, the city has a wealth of cultural opportunities for you to experience.
Even within your hometown, you can experience culture. American was known as the “Melting Pot”, and still continues to be, as the destination for many immigrants who reside across the nation. The restaurant business has taken the ethnic diversity of America and expanded to include foods from several nations. Also, your neighbors, co-workers and friends may not fit into the same ethnic identity as yourself, and can offer some interesting viewpoints on culture from their own background.
These are only a few ideas to broaden and enrich your cultural perspective. >>Click here for more ideas>>
